Volcanoes - Costa Rica is home to a great number of volcanoes — there are six active volcanoes and another 61 dormant or extinct ones. For the past 50 years, Arenal was the country’s most active volcano. Although it has been in a resting phase since 2010 (eruptions have paused), Arenal still is one of the country’s best-known and most-visited volcanoes.
Hop over to Scholastic's Study Jam's site to watch a short video about volcanoes. Then consider making your own volcanoes with the classic play-doh activity. Provide a cup and let your child create a volcano around the cup, leaving the top open. Once complete, explain that chemical reactions occur when two substances combine, and a change occurs creating a NEW substance. Let them add baking soda to the inside of their volcano (the base) and add vinegar (the base).
Visit Deep Space Sparkle's website for a video tutorial on how to make chalk pastel rainforest animals.
Play soccer! Soccer is the national pastime and the favorite sport in Costa Rica. Don't have a soccer ball? No problem, any ball will do. Practice passing or even use a laundry basket as a goal.
